Paul W. Tibbets autographed First Day Cover commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Hiroshima mission. Tibbets has signed prominently in blue ink above the printed designation, “Pilot Of The ENOLA GAY - Hiroshima, Japan 6 Aug. 1945.”

Paul W. Tibbets (1915-2007) was the commander of the 509th Composite Group and pilot of the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. Personally selected to lead the mission because of his exceptional flying ability, Tibbets oversaw the training and preparation of the specialized unit responsible for delivering the world’s first operational nuclear weapon. Following World War II, he continued his career in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a brigadier general after more than three decades of military service.
