Francis Thornhill autographed Japanese Government-issued 10 Centavos occupation currency note. Printed for circulation in the Japanese-occupied Philippines during World War II, the note has been signed and extensively inscribed in blue ink on the reverse, identifying himself as “Capt. Francis T. Thornhill,” noting “Straight Flush” and “393-5-1,” and adding “509th Bomb Group.” The reverse displays the ornate engraved design characteristic of the series.

Captain Francis T. Thornhill served as aircraft commander of the Boeing B-29 Straight Flush with the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group. On August 6, 1945, Straight Flush flew as one of the advance weather reconnaissance aircraft supporting the Hiroshima mission, reporting favorable conditions over the primary target. The aircraft also participated in weather reconnaissance operations for the Nagasaki mission three days later, providing critical meteorological information used in planning the atomic bombing missions against Japan.
