Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) served as a major in the U.S. Army Air Forces and commanded the Boeing B-29 Bockscar on August 9, 1945, during the atomic mission against Nagasaki, Japan. Originally assigned to the primary target of Kokura, cloud cover forced the mission to divert to Nagasaki, where the “Fat Man” atomic bomb was successfully released. Sweeney later authored War’s End: An Eyewitness Account of America’s Last Atomic Mission and remained active in preserving the history of the 509th Composite Group throughout his life
