Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) was a U.S. Army Air Forces officer and one of the most distinguished members of the elite 509th Composite Group. As pilot of the B-29 Bockscar, he commanded the historic Nagasaki mission, delivering the “Fat Man” atomic bomb that helped bring about Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II. Three days earlier, Sweeney also piloted The Great Artiste, the instrument aircraft that accompanied the Enola Gay during the Hiroshima mission, making him the only pilot to participate directly in both atomic bombing operations. He later retired from the Air Force Reserve with the rank of major general.
