Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) was a U.S. Army Air Forces officer and one of the most prominent members of the elite 509th Composite Group. As pilot of the B-29 Bockscar, he commanded the historic Nagasaki mission, delivering the “Fat Man” atomic bomb that helped bring about Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II. Sweeney had previously piloted The Great Artiste as the instrument aircraft during the Hiroshima mission three days earlier, making him the only pilot to participate directly in both atomic bombing operations. After the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of major general.
