Fine condition.
Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) was a U.S. Army Air Forces major and pilot of the B-29 Bockscar, the aircraft that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. A member of the elite 509th Composite Group, Sweeney had previously piloted The Great Artiste as the instrument aircraft during the Hiroshima mission three days earlier. Despite mechanical difficulties, fuel shortages, and poor weather over the primary target at Kokura, Sweeney successfully completed the Nagasaki mission before making an emergency landing at Okinawa. After the war, he remained in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a major general, and became an active participant in preserving the history of the atomic bomb missions.
