Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-1999) was an American chemist whose pioneering work transformed nuclear science. In 1941, he co-discovered plutonium, the element that became the fissile core of the Fat Man atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. During the Manhattan Project, Seaborg led the team that developed methods for isolating and producing plutonium on a large scale, making the wartime atomic program possible. He was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discoveries in the chemistry of the transuranium elements and later served for a decade as Chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.
