Lillian Hickman Schklar was among the thousands of young women recruited to work at the highly secret Oak Ridge, Tennessee, facilities during World War II. Known today as the “Atomic City Girls,” these workers operated complex machinery and performed critical production tasks, often without knowing the true purpose of their work. Schklar served in Oak Ridge from 1944 to 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project, contributing to the enrichment of uranium that ultimately powered the “Little Boy” atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Like many Oak Ridge workers, she did not learn the full significance of her wartime service until after Japan’s surrender and the Manhattan Project was publicly revealed.
