Price served as a captain in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron and was the regularly assigned aircraft commander of the B-29 Some Punkins, one of the specially modified Silverplate bombers of the 509th Composite Group prepared for atomic warfare operations during World War II.

James N. Price Jr. served as a captain in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron of the 509th Composite Group, the elite unit created to deliver the world’s first atomic weapons. He was the regularly assigned commander of the B-29 Some Punkins, one of the fifteen Silverplate aircraft specially modified to carry atomic bombs. Although Some Punkins did not fly the Hiroshima or Nagasaki strike missions, it participated extensively in the 509th’s training program and later served in test and support operations connected with the atomic mission, making Price one of the officers entrusted with one of the most specialized aircraft of the Manhattan Project.
