Richard H. Nelson autographed 10 x 8” black-and-white photograph depicting the headquarters sign of the 509th Composite Group, the elite U.S. Army Air Forces unit formed to carry out the atomic bomb missions during World War II. Nelson has signed the photograph in blue ink across the upper margin.

Richard H. Nelson (1920–2003) served as the radio operator aboard the Enola Gay, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. As a member of Colonel Paul W. Tibbets Jr.’s handpicked crew within the 509th Composite Group, Nelson played a vital communications role during one of the most consequential missions in military history. Following the war, he remained active in preserving the history of the 509th Composite Group and the legacy of the dawn of the atomic age.
