Curtis R. Mirgon autographed commemorative cover honoring the 45th anniversary reunion of the 509th Composite Group. Postmarked at Wendover, Utah, on August 25, 1990, the cover features a special cachet reading “A Celebration for World Peace” and “First Atomic Bombardment,” commemorating the unit that carried out the atomic bombing missions during World War II. Mirgon has signed the cover in black ink, adding his rank, “Major USAF Ret.,” along with a lengthy inscription identifying his wartime service with the “509th Composite Group, 320 TCS (Base Operations), Tinian, West Field, Shuttle.”

Curtis R. Mirgon served as a major in the United States Air Force and was assigned to the 509th Composite Group during World War II. He served with the 320th Troop Carrier Squadron in Base Operations at West Field on Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands, the primary operating base for the 509th’s atomic bombing missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
