Fine condition.
Captain George W. Marquardt (1919–2003) was one of the elite B-29 pilots of the 509th Composite Group. Although regularly assigned to the Silverplate B-29 Up An’ Atom, he was selected to command Necessary Evil on the Hiroshima mission of August 6, 1945. His aircraft carried the scientific observers and photographic equipment intended to document the first wartime use of an atomic weapon. On August 9, 1945, Marquardt flew the Enola Gay as the weather reconnaissance aircraft over Kokura during the Nagasaki mission. His participation in both atomic bombing operations places him among the small group of airmen directly involved in the historic missions that brought World War II to a close.
