James L. Van Pelt served with the historic 509th Composite Group, the highly secretive Army Air Forces unit created to deliver the world’s first operational atomic weapons during World War II. Based at Wendover Field, Utah, the 509th trained extensively before deploying to Tinian Island, where it carried out the atomic bombing missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
Roy Gallagher also served with the 509th Composite Group during World War II. Formed under the command of Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, the 509th Composite Group was the only military unit specifically organized, trained, and equipped to employ atomic weapons in combat, fundamentally altering the course of World War II and modern history.
