Details:
Edgar Harrell autographed commemorative cover honoring the 50th Anniversary of the American Legion, signed in black ink with the added inscription “USMC.” Harrell was one of the last surviving U.S. Marine survivors of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35), one of the most tragic naval disasters in American history.
Fine condition.
Edgar Harrell (1924-2020) served as a U.S. Marine aboard the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis, which had just completed its top-secret mission delivering key components of the Little Boy atomic bomb to Tinian Island before being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945. Of the nearly 1,200 men aboard, only 316 survived after four harrowing days in shark-infested waters awaiting rescue. Harrell devoted much of his later life to preserving the memory of his fellow crewmen, authoring Out of the Depths and speaking extensively about the Indianapolis disaster and its connection to the closing days of World War II.
