Richard L. Garwin (1928- ) is an American physicist whose contributions to nuclear weapons design have made him one of the most influential scientists of the Cold War. Working under Edward Teller at Los Alamos, Garwin produced the engineering design for the first successful thermonuclear weapon, the Ivy Mike hydrogen bomb device detonated in 1952. While the Teller-Ulam concept provided the theoretical framework, Garwin’s detailed design transformed the concept into a workable device, leading many historians to describe him as the principal designer or architect of the first hydrogen bomb. Beyond his work in nuclear physics, Garwin made major contributions to computing, satellite reconnaissance, national security, and arms control, advising numerous U.S. presidents over a career spanning more than seven decades.
