Ray Gallagher served as a combat crew member aboard the B-29 Bockscar with the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group. He participated in the Nagasaki atomic mission on August 9, 1945, during the second and final wartime use of an atomic bomb, a mission that helped bring World War II to a close.
