Ray Gallagher served as a combat crew member with the 509th Composite Group, the specially organized Army Air Forces unit responsible for carrying out the atomic bomb missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Operating from Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands, the 509th Composite Group conducted the only wartime use of nuclear weapons in history, bringing about the final chapter of World War II. Gallagher’s inscription documenting his participation in both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki missions adds significant historical importance to this commemorative cover.
