Ray Gallagher served with the 509th Composite Group, the elite Army Air Forces unit responsible for carrying out the atomic bombing missions against Japan in August 1945. Assigned as a crew member on both the Great Artiste and Bockscar, Gallagher participated in the operations surrounding the Hiroshima and Nagasaki missions that brought World War II to a close. Signed documentation from members of the 509th Composite Group remains highly sought after, particularly examples directly related to the planning, navigation, and execution of the historic atomic bombing missions.
