William Downey autographed Japanese Government-issued 10 Centavos occupation currency note. Printed for circulation in the Japanese-occupied Philippines during World War II, the note has been signed by Downey in black ink across the upper portion of the face. The reverse displays the ornate engraved design characteristic of the series.

William Downey served as chaplain of the 509th Composite Group during World War II. Assigned to the specially organized U.S. Army Air Forces unit responsible for the atomic bombing missions against Japan, Downey provided spiritual guidance and pastoral support to the group’s personnel throughout its service. Stationed with the 509th on Tinian in the Mariana Islands, he remained with the unit during the final months of the Pacific War and later participated in preserving the history of the 509th Composite Group through veterans’ reunions and commemorative events.
