Gilbert B. Dickman served as a U.S. Army Air Forces pilot assigned to the Manhattan Project’s highly secretive logistics operation. He piloted the aircraft that transported the Fat Man atomic bomb from Kirtland Field, New Mexico, to Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands, where the weapon was assembled and loaded aboard Bockscar for the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The successful delivery of the bomb’s components to the Pacific theater was an essential step in one of the most consequential military operations of World War II.
