Leonard Cheshire autographed First Day Cover commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 509th Composite Group and the end of World War II, signed in blue ink. Cheshire served as the official British observer attached to the United States atomic bombing operations in the Pacific. Stationed with the 509th Composite Group on Tinian, he observed the Hiroshima mission and flew aboard the B-29 Big Stink during the Nagasaki atomic bombing mission, making him one of the few Allied officers outside the American crews to witness the dawn of the nuclear age firsthand.

Leonard Cheshire (1917-1992) was one of Great Britain’s most decorated Royal Air Force officers, earning the Victoria Cross after completing more than 100 combat missions during World War II. In the closing weeks of the war, he was selected by the British government to serve as its official observer with the U.S. 509th Composite Group during the atomic bomb missions against Japan. Following the Hiroshima bombing, Cheshire surveyed the devastated city from the air, and on August 9, 1945, he flew aboard the observation aircraft Big Stink during the Nagasaki mission. His firsthand involvement in both atomic bomb operations gives him a unique place in the history of the Manhattan Project and the end of World War II. After the war, Cheshire dedicated his life to humanitarian work, founding the Cheshire Homes organization for disabled individuals, a legacy that earned him international recognition far beyond his distinguished military career.
