George R. Caron (1919-1995) served as the tail gunner aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the Hiroshima mission of August 6, 1945. A member of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group, Caron was the only crewman wearing protective welder’s goggles at the moment of detonation, allowing him to witness the explosion directly. He also captured some of the mission’s most important photographs of the mushroom cloud through the aircraft’s rear windows, images that became among the most recognizable visual records of the atomic bombing.
