Ron Evans (1933-1990) served as Command Module Pilot for Apollo 17, the final crewed mission of NASA’s Apollo program. While Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt explored the lunar surface, Evans remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module America, completing 75 lunar revolutions. On the return journey to Earth, he performed a deep-space EVA to retrieve film canisters from the spacecraft’s scientific instrument module, one of the final extravehicular activities of the Apollo era. Apollo 17 remains the most recent mission to land humans on the Moon.
