Charlie Duke autographed commemorative postal cover highlighting development of the Space Shuttle solid rocket motor, postmarked Brigham City, Utah, October 19, 1978. The cover bears a printed cachet describing Thiokol Corporation’s successful static firing test of a full-scale Space Shuttle solid rocket motor prototype. Duke has signed the cover prominently in black ink.

Charlie Duke (b. 1935) served as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 16 and became the tenth person to walk on the Moon in April 1972. Before his lunar mission, he served as CAPCOM for Apollo 11, relaying Neil Armstrong’s historic first words from the lunar surface to Mission Control. A retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general, Duke remains one of the youngest astronauts ever to walk on the Moon and is recognized as one of the leading figures of the Apollo program.
