Gene Cernan autographed commemorative postal cover honoring the fifth anniversary of Apollo 17, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, December 7, 1977. Issued as part of the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum’s Milestones of Flight commemorative series, the cover commemorates the final crewed lunar landing of the Apollo program. Cernan has signed the cover prominently in black ink.

Gene Cernan (1934-2017) was commander of Apollo 17, the final lunar landing mission of the Apollo program, and became the eleventh and, to date, last person to walk on the Moon. A veteran of Gemini 9A and Apollo 10, Cernan spent more than 73 hours on the lunar surface during Apollo 17, conducting extensive geological exploration with astronaut Harrison Schmitt. As he departed the Moon on December 14, 1972, Cernan left with the hope that humanity would one day return, making his final footsteps among the most enduring moments in the history of space exploration.
