Frank Borman (1928–2023) was a U.S. Air Force officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut who commanded the historic Apollo 8 mission, the first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, reach the Moon, and orbit it in December 1968. Alongside James Lovell and William Anders, Borman helped pave the way for the Apollo lunar landings while delivering the mission’s memorable Christmas Eve broadcast from lunar orbit. Earlier, he commanded Gemini 7, completing a record-setting 14-day mission and participating in the first rendezvous of two crewed spacecraft with Gemini 6A. After leaving NASA, Borman served as a senior executive and later chairman of Eastern Air Lines.
