Arctic Explorers tobacco card lot of three from the popular Hassan Cigarettes “The World’s Greatest Explorers” series, featuring colorful portrait cards of three of the most famous figures associated with nineteenth-century Arctic exploration: Maj. Gen. Adolphus W. Greely, David L. Brainard, and George W. De Long. Each card includes a finely printed color portrait on the front and a detailed biographical summary on the reverse.

This attractive early twentieth-century tobacco card group highlights some of the most celebrated explorers of the Arctic age. George W. De Long commanded the ill-fated Jeannette Expedition, one of the most dramatic and tragic polar ventures in American history. Adolphus W. Greely led the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, an ambitious scientific mission remembered for both its groundbreaking discoveries and extraordinary hardships. David L. Brainard, one of Greely’s expedition members, survived the ordeal and later became one of the most respected military explorers of his generation.

Good condition overall with light expected toning and age wear. Cards exhibit typical handling, corner wear, and minor surface imperfections consistent with early twentieth-century tobacco issues.

Adolphus Washington Greely (1844-1935) was a United States Army officer, Medal of Honor recipient, and Arctic explorer who led the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881-1884. Despite catastrophic losses among his party, Greely’s expedition achieved important geographic and scientific discoveries and established a new “farthest north” record. David Legge Brainard (1856-1946) was one of the expedition’s survivors and later became a distinguished military officer and explorer. George Washington De Long (1844-1881) was a U.S. Navy officer who commanded the Jeannette Expedition in search of a northern route to the North Pole, becoming one of the most famous figures in the history of Arctic exploration.
