This attractive group chronicles the growth of American industry during the nation’s great age of corporate expansion. The American Tobacco Company emerged in the late nineteenth century as one of the country’s largest industrial enterprises, helping shape the modern tobacco industry through aggressive consolidation and nationwide distribution. The Pennsylvania Railroad, often called the “Standard Railroad of the World,” became the largest corporation in America during the nineteenth century and played a central role in connecting the nation’s manufacturing centers.
