Ira C. Weatherly autographed commemorative cacheted cover honoring the 50th anniversary of the 509th Composite Group, postmarked at Wendover, Utah, on August 25, 1990. Weatherly has signed in blue ink, adding the inscription “Co Pilot Straight Flush.” The cover bears the official First Atomic Bombardment commemorative cachet and a 25¢ World Peace postage stamp.

Ira C. Weatherly served as co-pilot of the B-29 Straight Flush, one of the specially equipped weather reconnaissance aircraft assigned to support the atomic bombing missions of August 1945. On August 9, 1945, Straight Flush flew ahead of the strike force to report weather conditions over Kokura, the primary target. Weatherly’s crew determined that cloud cover made visual bombing difficult, contributing to the decision to divert the mission to the secondary target of Nagasaki. As a member of the 509th Composite Group, Weatherly participated in one of the most consequential operations of World War II.
