Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921-2014) served as navigator aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the Hiroshima mission of August 6, 1945. A member of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group, Van Kirk was responsible for navigating the aircraft from Tinian to Hiroshima and safely back following the first wartime use of an atomic bomb. After the war, he earned degrees in chemical engineering and business administration and enjoyed a long career in the chemical industry before becoming one of the last surviving crew members to share firsthand accounts of the historic mission.
