Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921-2014) was the navigator of the Enola Gay, flying alongside pilot Paul W. Tibbets and bombardier Thomas Ferebee on the first atomic bombing mission in history. A veteran of numerous combat missions before joining the elite 509th Composite Group, Van Kirk was responsible for navigating the aircraft from Tinian Island to Hiroshima and safely returning after the successful completion of the mission. His role in the historic flight placed him among the small group of airmen directly responsible for one of the most consequential events of the Second World War.
