Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921-2014) served as navigator aboard the Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Working alongside pilot Paul W. Tibbets and bombardier Thomas W. Ferebee, Van Kirk successfully guided the B-29 from Tinian to Hiroshima and back, ensuring the mission remained precisely on course. A veteran of numerous combat missions before joining the 509th Composite Group, he remained one of the last surviving members of the Enola Gay crew and later participated in educational programs and historical discussions concerning the legacy of the atomic bomb missions.
