Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk autographed commemorative cacheted cover marking the 40th Anniversary of the First Use of the Atomic Bomb, featuring artwork of the B-29 Enola Gay and commemorative postal cancellations from Enola, Arkansas, and Gay, Wisconsin. Van Kirk has hand signed the cover in blue ink at the upper left. The additional signatures of Paul W. Tibbets and Jacob Beser at the lower portion are printed facsimiles incorporated into the original cover design and are not hand signed.

Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921-2014) served as the navigator aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. A member of the elite 509th Composite Group, he was responsible for plotting the aircraft’s course from Tinian to Hiroshima and safely navigating the return flight following the mission. Van Kirk later participated in Operation Crossroads, the 1946 atomic tests at Bikini Atoll, before pursuing a successful business career. He remained active for decades in preserving the history of the atomic missions through lectures, reunions, and educational programs.
