Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was one of the most prominent American Congregational ministers, social reformers, and abolitionists of the nineteenth century. As pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York, he became nationally known for his powerful sermons opposing slavery and supporting the Union during the Civil War. Beecher was a leading advocate for women’s suffrage, temperance, and educational reform, and his influence extended well beyond the pulpit through his lectures and published writings. He was also the brother of Uncle Tom’s Cabin author Harriet Beecher Stowe.
