Hempstead Washburne autographed handwritten appointment approval document, one page, approximately 6 x 9.5 inches, penned on letterhead of Chicago’s famed Kinsley’s Restaurant, dated New York, May 28, 1895. In full, Washburne writes:

“I hereby appoint Seymour Morris for and as my proxy to vote & act for me in changing the By-Laws in the Society of the Colonial Wars.” Signed at the conclusion, “Hempstead Washburne.”

A scarce and unusual manuscript document signed by Chicago Mayor Hempstead Washburne during his post-mayoral years. Written while in New York, the document appoints Seymour Morris as his proxy and grants authority to vote and act on his behalf regarding proposed changes to the bylaws of the Society of Colonial Wars, one of the nation’s leading hereditary patriotic organizations. The brief text offers an interesting glimpse into Washburne’s continued involvement in civic and historical societies following his tenure as mayor and reflects the importance such organizations held among prominent American political and business leaders during the late nineteenth century.

Hempstead Washburne (1853-1918) served as Mayor of Chicago from 1891 to 1893 and was a prominent businessman, civic leader, and member of the influential Washburne political family. The son of Congressman Elihu B. Washburne and nephew of statesman Israel Washburn Jr., he remained active in public affairs and numerous organizations following his mayoralty. Washburne’s administration is remembered for municipal reform efforts and for overseeing Chicago during a period of rapid growth leading into the city’s emergence as a major national center of commerce and industry.
