Details:
George Wallace’s personally owned Alabama Academy of Honor program signed by an extraordinary group of Alabama political, military, athletic, and scientific figures, highlighted by the signatures of legendary University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and pioneering rocket scientist Werner von Braun. Additional signatures include Alabama governors James E. “Big Jim” Folsom and John Patterson, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, U.S. Senator John Sparkman, and diplomat Frank A. Rose.
The program was produced for the Alabama Academy of Honor and features biographical pages signed by both Bryant and von Braun. Few Alabama-related signed items combine two figures of such lasting national significance. Bryant remains one of the most celebrated coaches in college football history, while von Braun is widely recognized as the architect of America’s Saturn V rocket program and one of the principal figures behind the success of the Apollo Moon missions.
Adding significantly to the importance of the lot is its direct provenance from the Wallace family. Accompanying the signed program are a personally signed check from George C. Wallace, three check stubs completed in Wallace’s hand, a life insurance document, and a mailing envelope addressed to Wallace. Together, the collection provides a unique glimpse into the personal papers and possessions of one of the most influential and controversial political figures in twentieth-century Southern history.
The Alabama Academy of Honor was established to recognize citizens whose achievements brought distinction to the State of Alabama. This example is particularly notable for the concentration of prominent honorees represented within its pages, spanning politics, military service, science, and athletics. The inclusion of signatures from both Bryant and von Braun elevates the piece well beyond a typical commemorative program and places it among the more desirable Alabama historical collectibles to reach the market.
Overall condition is very good with expected handling wear.
Paul “Bear” Bryant (1913-1983) was one of the most successful and influential coaches in college football history. As head coach of the University of Alabama from 1958 to 1982, Bryant won six national championships and established the Crimson Tide as a dominant force in the sport. His legacy remains synonymous with Alabama football and Southern athletics.
Wernher von Braun (1912-1977) was a German-American aerospace engineer and one of the principal architects of the United States space program. After helping develop the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon, he became one of the most recognizable scientific figures of the Space Age. His contributions were instrumental in achieving President John F. Kennedy’s goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s.
