William Plumer signed official State of New Hampshire military commission appointing Levi Jones as Second Lieutenant of the Company of Cavalry in the Fifth Regiment of Militia. Printed document completed in manuscript, measuring approximately 14.5 x 12 inches, dated April 28, 1817, and boldly signed by Governor William Plumer. The commission is countersigned by Secretary Samuel Sparhawk, bears the embossed seal of the State of New Hampshire at left, and includes the completed oath of office before a Justice of the Peace dated June 10, 1817.

Good to very good condition. Folded with expected age toning, scattered foxing, and moderate handling wear. Partial separation is present along the left fold line at the edge, with additional minor fold wear. The embossed state seal remains intact.

William Plumer (1759-1850) served as Governor of New Hampshire from 1812 to 1813 and again from 1816 to 1819. A veteran of the American Revolution and later a United States Senator, Plumer was one of New Hampshire’s most influential early political figures. During the early nineteenth century, state militia commissions formally appointed officers responsible for organizing, training, and commanding local militia units under state authority. Signed by the governor and impressed with the official state seal, these commissions are important surviving documents from the early American militia system that preceded the modern National Guard.
