David L. Morril signed official State of New Hampshire military commission appointing Levi Jones as Major of the Fifth Regiment of Militia. Printed document completed in manuscript, measuring approximately 15.5 x 9.5 inches, dated June 18, 1825, and boldly signed by Governor David L. Morril. The commission is countersigned by Secretary Richard Bartlett, bears the embossed seal of the State of New Hampshire at left, and includes the completed oath of office before a Justice of the Peace dated July 11, 1825.
Very good condition. Folded with expected age toning, light scattered foxing, and minor edge wear. The embossed state seal remains.
David Lawrence Morril (1772-1849) served as the 24th Governor of New Hampshire from 1824 to 1826 and later represented the state in the United States Senate from 1833 to 1837. During the early nineteenth century, state militia commissions formally appointed officers responsible for organizing, training, and commanding local militia units under state authority.
