John Bassett Moore authored this pair of autographed letters to Victor Rosewater, prominent editor and publisher of the Omaha Bee, spanning Moore’s distinguished academic and diplomatic career. The archive consists of a typed letter signed (TLS) on Department of State letterhead dated May 5, 1898, and a handwritten autograph letter signed (ALS) on Columbia University School of Political Science letterhead dated December 4, 1904.

The earlier letter, written shortly after Moore’s appointment as Assistant Secretary of State, thanks Rosewater for a congratulatory telegram, writing, “Among the congratulations which I have received upon my appointment, none are more gratifying than those of my former students. I am greatly obliged to you for your good opinion…” He concludes by expressing his hope that Rosewater will visit him when next in the East.

The second letter, penned six years later while Moore was serving as professor at Columbia University, reflects his continuing friendship with Rosewater. Seeking Rosewater’s advice on an investment, Moore asks for his assessment of the Omaha & Council Bluffs Railway Company, explaining that a New York banker was promoting the company’s first consolidated mortgage 5% gold bonds. Moore notes that the promotional circular provided little useful information regarding the company’s financial condition and asks Rosewater for his personal opinion before making any investment. The letter closes with warm personal regards and Moore’s bold signature.

John Bassett Moore (1860-1947) was one of the foremost American authorities on international law. He served as Assistant Secretary of State under President William McKinley, represented the United States at numerous international conferences, and was later appointed the first Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy at Columbia University. In 1921 he became the first American judge to serve on the Permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague. Moore authored numerous influential legal works that helped shape the development of modern international law and remains one of the most respected legal scholars in American diplomatic history.
