Carter Henry Harrison signed clipping, measuring approximately 4.5 x 2 inches, boldly inscribed and signed, “Very truly yours, Carter H. Harrison,” with the notation “Chicago Oct. 31. 91” in Harrison’s hand.

An important figure in Chicago political history, Carter Henry Harrison Sr. (1825-1893) served five terms as Mayor of Chicago and was one of the city’s most influential nineteenth-century political leaders. Harrison guided Chicago through a period of tremendous growth and national prominence and was serving as mayor during preparations for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

The date of this signature is particularly notable. Signed on October 31, 1891, it was penned almost exactly two years before Harrison’s assassination on October 28, 1893. Just days before the scheduled closing of the World’s Columbian Exposition, Harrison was shot and killed in his home by Patrick Eugene Prendergast, an event that shocked Chicago and the nation.

A desirable signed relic from one of Chicago’s most significant political figures, made especially appealing by the fully dated inscription and bold presentation.
