Benjamin Chew autographed manuscript financial document dated June 8, 1791, signed prominently at the conclusion. In the document, Chew acknowledges the receipt of interest payments due on bonds, and referencing principal obligations. Penned entirely in period manuscript hand and signed with Chew’s distinctive flowing signature.

Benjamin Chew (1722-1810) was one of colonial and early America’s most influential legal and political figures. A prominent Philadelphia attorney, he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and was among the wealthiest and most powerful men in the colonies. During the American Revolution he attempted to maintain a neutral stance, resulting in periods of imprisonment and political controversy. Chew later participated in Pennsylvania’s constitutional convention and remained an important figure in the early Republic.
