James G. Blaine autographed letter (ALS), dated Augusta, Maine, June 13, 1884, and signed at the conclusion, “James G. Blaine.” The letter is addressed to Willard J. Black, Esq., Des Moines, Iowa, and was written just days after Blaine secured the Republican nomination for President of the United States.

Writing in response to a congratulatory letter, Blaine expresses his appreciation while explaining that the extraordinary demands upon his time prevent a more personal reply. He writes, in part, “Accept my sincere thanks for your kind letter of congratulation.” Blaine continues by noting that “the great demands upon my time, and the many letters and telegrams which I have received, compel me to make this somewhat informal acknowledgment.”

The letter was written during the opening days of Blaine’s 1884 presidential campaign and reflects the flood of correspondence generated by his nomination. Though brief, it provides a contemporary glimpse into the pressures and public attention surrounding one of the most significant political figures of the Gilded Age.

James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893) was an American statesman who served as Speaker of the House, U.S. Senator from Maine, and Secretary of State under Presidents James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, and Benjamin Harrison. A dominant figure within the Republican Party during the late nineteenth century, he was the party’s nominee for President in 1884, narrowly losing to Grover Cleveland. His influence on American politics and foreign policy made him one of the most prominent political leaders of his generation.
