Original United Cigar Stores Company of America one-half premium certificate, issued as part of the company’s nationwide customer rewards program. Printed in blue, red, and black with an ornate engraved design, the certificate bears serial number 753299 SO and features the company’s distinctive “United Cigars” shield logos. The certificate states that it was redeemable, under the conditions of the company’s premium catalog, only by the person to whom it was originally issued.

The reverse is equally decorative, displaying a large central one-half denomination surrounded by additional United Cigars logos and the printed slogan “Largest Cigar Retailers in the World.” Produced by the Eureka Specialty Printing Company, the certificate is an attractive example of early twentieth-century American advertising and tobacco ephemera.

Founded in 1901, United Cigar Stores Company of America grew into one of the largest cigar retail chains in the United States, operating thousands of locations during its peak years. Like many major retailers of the era, the company issued premium certificates that customers accumulated and redeemed for merchandise through illustrated premium catalogs, an early form of consumer loyalty program.
