Original folded advertising brochure promoting The Gingerbread Castle, the celebrated fairy tale attraction located in Hamburg, New Jersey. Measuring approximately 6.25 x 9.5 inches when folded, the brochure features an exterior photograph of the whimsical castle and an extensive interior guide describing its history, attractions, and visitor experience.
The brochure recounts the origins of the Gingerbread Castle, conceived by businessman F. H. Bennett, whose childhood love of fairy tales inspired him to create a permanent storybook attraction. Opened in 1930 at a cost of more than $250,000, the castle was designed with input from renowned theatrical set designer Joseph Urban and quickly became one of New Jersey’s best-known roadside attractions.
Visitors were guided through elaborate scenes inspired by classic fairy tales, including Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Little Miss Muffet, The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and Humpty Dumpty. The brochure describes many of the attraction’s memorable features, including the Witch’s Trophy Room, peppermint stick decorations, candy-themed architecture, enchanted halls, and fairy tale characters brought to life by costumed guides.
The reverse also advertises admission information, seasonal operating hours, free parking and picnic grounds, and refreshments available at the castle’s coffee shop, offering a glimpse into the golden age of mid-century American roadside tourism.
Overall good condition with expected horizontal fold, scattered toning, light staining, and moderate handling wear consistent with age.
