Details:
Statue of Liberty trade card issued as part of the Hassan Cigarettes Lighthouse Series, featuring an attractive color illustration of the Statue of Liberty on the front and descriptive historical text on the reverse. Produced by Hassan Cork Tip Cigarettes, one of the most popular cigarette brands of the era, the card was distributed as a promotional premium and educational collectible during the early twentieth century.
The front depicts the Statue of Liberty standing atop its pedestal in New York Harbor, while the reverse provides period information about the monument, identifying it as being located on Liberty Island (then commonly referred to as Bedloe’s Island). The text notes the statue’s height, construction, and significance as a gift from the people of France to the United States commemorating the friendship between the two nations. The reverse also references sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and includes advertising for Hassan Cork Tip Cigarettes, then promoted as “The Oriental Smoke.”
Good condition overall with light expected toning and age wear, corner and edge wear, minor surface handling.
Dedicated in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and engineered with assistance from Gustave Eiffel. Presented by France to the United States as a symbol of liberty and friendship, the monument became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and served as a powerful emblem of hope for millions of immigrants arriving in New York Harbor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today it remains one of America’s most enduring national symbols.
