Details:
Benjamin January autograph letter signed, one page, Philadelphia, June 2, 1786, to Moses McClean regarding payment for a custom-made record book. January writes, “I will esteem it a particular favour, if you will inform me, how I am to be paid for a Record Book, which was made for you by Brother Archibald about 6 Weeks ago. The price was 50/.” He politely requests that payment be sent “by any careful person,” directed either to himself or to Mr. John Lusk in Philadelphia. The integral address panel is addressed to Moses McClean of Marsh Creek, York County, Pennsylvania, who was likely the Revolutionary War officer and frontier pioneer Captain Moses McClean (1737-1810). The address is sent in care of Henry Miller at York Town and retains portions of its original red wax seal.
Very good condition. Expected folds from mailing, light age toning, scattered minor foxing, remnants of the original red wax seal, and minor edge wear.
Benjamin January (c. 1752-1813) was a Philadelphia stationer, bookbinder, and merchant whose business supplied blank books, ledgers, and record books during the formative years of the United States. Written just three years after the end of the Revolutionary War, this letter provides a glimpse into the commercial book trade of early America, documenting the production and sale of custom record books to customers in the Pennsylvania frontier. The likely recipient, Captain Moses McClean, was a Revolutionary War officer, early settler, and pioneer who played an important role in the development of western Pennsylvania, making this an appealing piece connecting two figures of the early American Republic.
