William Anderson signed this handwritten petition requesting renewal of his license to operate a public house in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, addressed to the Justices holding the Court of Quarter Sessions and dated September 18, 1753. Measuring approximately 5.5 x 7.5 inches, the document provides a rare glimpse into the regulation of taverns in colonial Pennsylvania just two years after Northampton County was established.

Addressed to the county justices meeting at Easton, Anderson explains that he had previously been recommended to the Governor for a tavern license and had since completed a suitable public house. He respectfully petitions the court to once again recommend him for licensure, writing in part, “Your Petitioner having heretofore been recommended by your Worships to His Honour the Governour for his Licence to keep a Publick House and now having a house in Easton almost finished suitable for that purpose does humbly pray your Worships again to recommend him as aforesaid.” He concludes with his signature, “Wm. Anderson.” On the reverse, period notations record, “Wm. Anderson’s Petition - Allowed,” indicating that his request was approved.

During the colonial period, taverns served as essential centers of commerce, travel, communication, and local government.
