Details:
Manuscript legal document dated November 14-15, 1792, concerning the satisfaction and cancellation of a mortgage recorded in New York City. The document certifies that a mortgage originally granted by John Anthony and his wife Margaret on July 8, 1789, had been fully paid and discharged. The reverse records the formal acknowledgment before John Ray, a Master in Chancery for the State of New York, with William Proctor appearing to affirm the satisfaction of the mortgage. Entirely handwritten on laid paper and completed during the earliest years of the United States under the Constitution.
Good condition overall with expected toning and age wear. The document exhibits fold lines, scattered ink smudging, edge chipping, and losses along the margins consistent with more than two centuries of handling. There are also partial separations along fold lines.
Legal documents such as this formed the backbone of property ownership and commerce in the early Republic. Created just a few years after the ratification of the United States Constitution and during George Washington’s presidency, the document offers a tangible glimpse into the administration of land, debt, and property rights in post-Revolutionary New York.
