Printed booklet titled Address in the Old Concord Meeting House, April 19, 1894 by E. R. (Ebenezer Rockwood) Hoar, delivered at Concord, Massachusetts during the annual Patriots’ Day observance commemorating the opening engagements of the American Revolution. Printed by Beacon Press, Thomas Todd, Boston, 1894, the booklet contains Hoar’s address reflecting upon the enduring significance of April 19, 1775, and Concord’s role in the birth of the nation. In the opening pages, Hoar recounts attending the 1825 celebration as a schoolboy, the seventy-fifth anniversary in 1850, and the centennial celebration in 1875 attended by the President of the United States, members of the Cabinet, governors of the New England states, and other distinguished guests. The address serves as both a historical remembrance and a patriotic tribute to the men and events that marked the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The front cover bears contemporary ink notations identifying the booklet and date.

Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar (1816-1895) was an American lawyer, jurist, and statesman who served as Attorney General of the United States under President Ulysses S. Grant. A lifelong resident of Concord, Massachusetts, Hoar was one of New England’s foremost legal minds and an influential figure in preserving the town’s Revolutionary heritage. His speeches commemorating Patriots’ Day and the Battles of Lexington and Concord reflect the late nineteenth century’s reverence for the nation’s founding and remain important historical accounts of how Americans remembered the Revolution a century after its beginning.
