Details:
Andrew Hicks autographed group of three Merchants Bank checks, each completed and signed by the noted New Bedford whaling merchant and entrepreneur. The checks are dated March 6, 1857, June 15, 1857, and November 13, 1857, and were issued through Merchants Bank of New Bedford, Massachusetts, then one of the principal financial institutions serving the world’s leading whaling port. The engraved checks each feature an attractive vignette of a sailing vessel, reflecting New Bedford’s close ties to the maritime trade that fueled its prosperity during the mid-nineteenth century.
Near fine condition.
Andrew Hicks was a prominent New Bedford businessman whose career was closely connected with the city’s thriving whaling industry during its nineteenth-century peak. At the time these checks were written, New Bedford stood as the world’s foremost whaling center, with fortunes built upon voyages that supplied whale oil and other products to markets across America and Europe. Surviving financial documents signed by merchants involved in this historic trade provide tangible connections to one of the defining commercial enterprises of maritime New England and the economic foundation of New Bedford’s “Golden Age of Whaling.”
